ICT

Our Commitment

We recognise that technology plays an important role in the lives of our children, both now and in the future. We aim to equip pupils with the digital skills, knowledge and confidence they need to learn, communicate, create and solve problems in an increasingly technological world.

As a child-centred, safe and inclusive school, we believe that every child should have access to meaningful opportunities to develop their digital capabilities. Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, we support and challenge pupils to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology, enabling them to achieve their full potential.

Using ICT is one of the three Cross-Curricular Skills within the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Rather than being taught in isolation, ICT is embedded across all areas of learning, helping children apply their digital skills in real and relevant contexts.

Our Aim

Through our ICT curriculum, we aim to:

  • Develop confident and capable users of technology.
  • Encourage creativity, innovation and problem-solving.
  • Equip children with the digital skills needed for learning and everyday life.
  • Foster responsible and safe use of technology.
  • Support pupils in communicating, collaborating and sharing ideas.
  • Help every child develop the confidence and skills needed to thrive in a digital world.

Learning Through ICT

At Richmount Primary School, ICT is used to enhance learning across the curriculum and provide opportunities for children to engage with technology in purposeful and meaningful ways.

Children use a range of digital tools to:

  • Research and investigate information.
  • Solve problems and explore new ideas.
  • Create and present their learning.
  • Develop coding and computational thinking skills.
  • Collaborate and communicate with others.
  • Reflect on and improve their work.
  • Showcase and celebrate their achievements.

By embedding technology throughout the curriculum, we help pupils develop transferable skills that can be applied across different subjects and real-life situations.

The 5 Es of Using ICT

The Northern Ireland Curriculum organises ICT learning through five key areas known as the 5 Es:

  • Explore: Children learn to find, select and use information effectively. They also use technology to investigate, enquire and solve problems through activities such as research, coding and digital exploration.
  • Express: Pupils use technology creatively to communicate ideas through text, images, sound, animation and multimedia presentations.
  • Exchange: Children learn how technology can be used to communicate and collaborate. They work together online, share ideas and develop digital communication skills.
  • Evaluate: Pupils reflect on both the process and outcome of their work, considering what worked well and how they can improve in the future.
  • Exhibit: Children learn how to organise, manage and showcase their work digitally, developing important skills in presenting and sharing information effectively.

Digital Creativity and Innovation

We believe technology provides powerful opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

Throughout their time at Richmount, pupils develop skills in areas such as:

  • Digital presentations and publishing.
  • Coding and computational thinking.
  • Multimedia projects.
  • Photography and digital artwork.
  • Film-making and animation.
  • Data handling and analysis.
  • Creative problem-solving.

These experiences help children become confident creators of digital content rather than simply consumers of technology.

Online Safety

Keeping children safe online is a key priority at Richmount Primary School.

Online safety education is embedded throughout our curriculum, helping pupils develop an understanding of how to use digital technologies safely, responsibly and respectfully.

Children learn about:

  • Safe online behaviour.
  • Protecting personal information.
  • Responsible communication.
  • Recognising online risks.
  • Reporting concerns and seeking support.

By developing good digital citizenship from an early age, we help children make informed and responsible choices whenever they are online.

ICT Resources

We are fortunate to have a wide range of digital technology available throughout the school to support teaching and learning.

Our pupils have access to:

  • Interactive classroom technology.
  • iPads and tablet technology.
  • Desktop and laptop computers.
  • Coding resources and educational software.
  • A range of age-appropriate digital learning tools and applications.

These resources enable children to develop their digital skills in engaging, practical and meaningful ways across all areas of the curriculum.

Working Together

Parents and families play an important role in supporting children's digital development. By encouraging responsible use of technology at home, discussing online safety and showing an interest in children's digital learning, families can help reinforce the skills developed in school.
By working together within our school community, we can help every child become a confident, creative and responsible digital citizen who is equipped to learn, communicate and succeed in an ever-changing world.
