Language and Literacy

Our Commitment

We believe that literacy is at the heart of every child’s learning journey. Through talking, listening, reading and writing, children develop the skills they need to communicate confidently, think critically, express themselves creatively and engage with the world around them.
Language and Literacy is one of the six Areas of Learning within the Northern Ireland Curriculum and underpins success across all subjects. Strong literacy skills enable children to access learning, build positive relationships and develop the confidence needed for lifelong learning.

Our Aim

We aim to nurture enthusiastic, confident communicators who enjoy reading, writing and sharing their ideas. We create a supportive and engaging learning environment where every child feels valued, encouraged and ready to take risks in their learning.

We encourage children to:

  • Develop confidence in speaking and listening.
  • Become fluent and enthusiastic readers.
  • Express themselves clearly and creatively through writing.
  • Use language effectively for learning across the curriculum.
  • Develop a lifelong love of books, stories and learning.

Talking and Listening

Spoken language is the foundation of learning. From Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 2, pupils are provided with regular opportunities to discuss, question, explain, debate and present their ideas.

Reading

Reading is a central part of life at Richmount Primary School. We believe that reading opens doors to imagination, knowledge and opportunity, and we strive to foster a genuine love of reading in every child.
Children are encouraged to read regularly at school and at home through a range of engaging texts and reading experiences. Our new library, reading initiatives and whole-school promotion of reading help pupils discover books that interest and inspire them.
We carefully monitor each child's progress and provide additional support where required to ensure every pupil can achieve success and develop confidence as a reader.

Accelerated Reader

From P4 – P7 pupils will have the opportunity participate in the Accelerated Reader programme, which helps children develop reading fluency, comprehension and independence.
The programme encourages regular reading and supports children in selecting books that match their reading ability while also challenging them to grow as readers. By developing strong reading habits, pupils gain increased confidence and improve their understanding across all areas of the curriculum.
The greatest success comes when school and home work together. We value the partnership between pupils, parents and staff in helping children develop positive reading habits and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

Writing

We believe that every child has something worthwhile to say and that writing provides an important opportunity for self-expression.
Children are taught the skills of writing through a structured approach that develops their understanding of spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Alongside these technical skills, we provide meaningful and engaging experiences that inspire children to write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Writing opportunities are integrated across the curriculum, allowing pupils to apply and develop their skills in real and relevant contexts. As children progress through the school, they are encouraged to become increasingly independent, creative and reflective writers.

Working Together

Parents play a vital role in supporting literacy development. Simple activities such as reading together, talking about books, encouraging conversation and providing opportunities for writing at home can make a significant difference to a child's progress.
By working together, we can ensure that every child develops the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed to become a successful learner and a lifelong reader.
