Personal Development and Mutual Understanding

Our Commitment

We believe that children's personal, social and emotional wellbeing is just as important as their academic development. As a child-centred, safe and inclusive school, we aim to nurture confident, resilient and responsible young people who feel known, valued and supported as they grow and learn.

Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU) is one of the six Areas of Learning within the Northern Ireland Curriculum. It encourages children to understand themselves and others, develop positive relationships, make informed choices and contribute positively to their communities.

Through PDMU, we support pupils in developing the skills, attitudes and values needed to achieve their full potential and become caring, respectful and responsible members of society.

Our Aim

Through PDMU, we aim to:

  • Develop children's confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
  • Encourage positive emotional health and wellbeing.
  • Promote healthy, safe and responsible choices.
  • Foster respect, empathy and understanding for others.
  • Help pupils develop positive relationships and effective communication skills.
  • Encourage children to become active and responsible members of their school and wider community.

Learning Through PDMU

PDMU provides opportunities for children to learn about themselves, build positive relationships and understand their role within the wider world.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Recognise and manage their feelings and emotions.
  • Develop confidence and independence.
  • Build positive friendships and relationships.
  • Respect the views, beliefs and experiences of others.
  • Understand the importance of kindness, honesty, fairness and responsibility.
  • Make informed decisions about their health, safety and wellbeing.

Through discussion, reflection and practical experiences, children develop the confidence and skills needed to navigate life's opportunities and challenges.

What Children Learn

The PDMU curriculum is organised through two closely connected strands:

1. Personal Understanding and Health

This strand helps children develop a positive sense of self and an understanding of how to care for their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

Pupils learn about:

  • Self-awareness and self-esteem.
  • Feelings and emotions.
  • Personal safety and risk awareness.
  • Healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
  • Making positive choices.
  • Goal setting and personal achievement.

By developing these skills, children become increasingly independent, resilient and confident learners.

2. Mutual Understanding in the Local and Wider Community

This strand focuses on helping children understand and value the people and communities around them.

Pupils explore:

  • Relationships and friendships.
  • Respect and inclusion.
  • Diversity and equality.
  • Rights and responsibilities.
  • Community involvement.
  • Conflict resolution and cooperation.

As a school at the heart of the community, we encourage children to appreciate the importance of belonging, contributing and showing respect for others.

Building Positive Relationships

At Richmount Primary School, we place great importance on creating an environment where every child feels safe, valued and respected.

Through PDMU, children learn to:

  • Work collaboratively with others.
  • Listen to and value different viewpoints.
  • Resolve disagreements respectfully.
  • Demonstrate empathy and understanding.
  • Recognise the impact their actions can have on others.

These skills help create a positive and supportive school community where everyone can thrive.

Developing Responsible Citizens

We want our pupils to leave Richmount with the confidence and values needed to make a positive contribution to society.

Through PDMU, children develop an understanding of:

  • Responsibility and accountability.
  • Fairness and honesty.
  • Respect for others and the environment.
  • Active citizenship.
  • Making informed and responsible decisions.

By exploring these important themes, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become thoughtful and responsible members of their local and wider communities.

Shared Education

At Richmount Primary School, we value the opportunity for children to learn with, and from, others beyond our own school community. Through our Shared Education partnership with St John's Primary School, Eglish, pupils take part in a range of collaborative learning experiences that promote friendship, understanding and respect.

These experiences provide opportunities for children to:

  • Build positive relationships with pupils from another school community.
  • Develop confidence in working alongside others.
  • Explore shared interests and experiences.
  • Challenge stereotypes and celebrate diversity.
  • Develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of inclusion, respect and mutual understanding.

Shared Education enriches children's learning experiences while encouraging them to become open-minded, respectful and responsible citizens who value the contributions of others.

Working Together

Parents and families play a crucial role in supporting children's personal, social and emotional development. By working closely together, we can help children develop confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards themselves and others.
Through our nurturing school community, we aim to ensure that every child feels known, valued and empowered to achieve their full potential while developing into a compassionate, respectful and responsible individual.
