Religious Education
Our Commitment
Religious Education plays an important role in supporting our vision of being a child-centred, safe and inclusive school where every child is known, valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential within a nurturing Christian ethos.
Religious Education helps children explore life's big questions, develop an understanding of Christian beliefs and values, and learn about the beliefs and experiences of others. Through discussion, reflection and enquiry, pupils are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions and develop respect for different viewpoints.
The Northern Ireland Core Syllabus for Religious Education focuses primarily on the beliefs, teachings and practices of the Christian faith. It also supports children in developing an awareness of their own beliefs and values, while fostering understanding, tolerance and respect within an increasingly diverse society.
Our Aim
Through Religious Education, we aim to:
- Develop an understanding of Christian beliefs, teachings and values.
- Encourage children to explore and reflect on life's important questions.
- Promote respect, empathy and understanding for others.
- Support pupils in developing their own values and sense of identity.
- Foster curiosity, discussion and thoughtful enquiry.
- Help every child grow as a caring, responsible and reflective member of our school community.
Learning Through Religious Education
Religious Education provides opportunities for children to explore questions about faith, meaning and purpose in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Children are encouraged to:
- Make sense of the world around them.
- Reflect on universal human experiences and questions.
- Consider how beliefs and values influence people's lives.
- Develop an awareness and appreciation of different perspectives.
- Explore celebrations, traditions and practices within Christianity and other faiths.
- Think about moral choices and the impact of their actions on others.
Through these experiences, pupils develop skills in questioning, reasoning, listening and respectful discussion.
Our Christian Ethos
Our Christian ethos is reflected throughout the life of the school and supports the values chosen by our stakeholders as pillars of our learning commuinty.
Children experience this through:
- Whole-school and class assemblies.
- Opportunities for prayer and reflection.
- Hymn practice and collective worship.
- Celebrations of Christian festivals and events.
- Daily interactions that promote care, respect and inclusion.
These experiences help foster a strong sense of belonging and community, while encouraging children to reflect on the values that guide their lives.
Engaging and Meaningful Learning
At Richmount Primary School, we believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged in their learning.
Religious Education lessons include opportunities for:
- Discussion and debate.
- Storytelling and exploration of biblical narratives.
- Drama and role play.
- Art and creative responses.
- Reflection and personal response.
- Written activities and research.
- Use of multimedia and digital resources.
Through a variety of learning experiences, children are encouraged to think critically, express their opinions respectfully and deepen their understanding of faith and values.
Working Together
We recognise that parents and families play a vital role in supporting children's spiritual, moral and personal development.
By working together within our nurturing school community, we aim to help every child develop confidence, compassion and respect for others while growing in their understanding of faith, values and the world around them.
