Our School History

Richmount Primary School has been at the heart of its local community for more than 200 years.

Records show that a school was established in the Richmount area as early as 1820. With financial support from Lord Lurgan, a purpose-built schoolhouse and teacher’s residence were constructed on a four-acre site along the old Portadown–Moy Road. The Old Richmount School officially opened in 1849 and provided an education for generations of local children.

As the school community continued to grow, a new and modern school building was opened in 1963 on the Moy Road near Scotch Street. This provided pupils with brighter classrooms, improved facilities and new opportunities for learning.

The school has continued to develop over the years. A new multipurpose hall and additional classroom were completed during the 2014–2015 school year and were officially opened by Olympic gold medallist Dame Mary Peters in January 2015.

Many of today’s pupils come from families who have lived in the Richmount area for generations. This strong sense of tradition and community remains central to school life. A collection of photographs from years gone by are currently being added to an online library which we hope to make available to all on our website in the near future.

Our school motto includes the phrase "Building on the Past". Here at Richmount Primary School we are proud to build upon our remarkable history while continuing to provide children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the future.
