The Arts

Our Commitment

We believe that every child is creative and deserves opportunities to express themselves, explore their talents and develop confidence through the arts. As a child-centred, safe and inclusive school, we nurture creativity and imagination, ensuring that every child feels known, valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

The Arts is one of the six Areas of Learning within the Northern Ireland Curriculum and brings together three interconnected strands:

  • Art and Design
  • Drama
  • Music

Through these areas, children are encouraged to explore ideas, express feelings and develop their understanding of the world around them through visual art, sound, movement and performance.

Our Aim

Through The Arts, we aim to:

  • Foster creativity, curiosity and imagination.
  • Develop confidence and self-expression.
  • Encourage children to communicate ideas and emotions in a variety of ways.
  • Nurture artistic, musical and performance skills.
  • Develop an appreciation of beauty, culture and creativity.
  • Support and challenge every child to reach their full potential.

Learning Through The Arts

At Richmount Primary School, we believe that creativity is an important part of every child's development. Through a wide range of artistic experiences, pupils are encouraged to explore, experiment, create and reflect.

The Arts provide opportunities for children to:

  • Use their imagination and creativity.
  • Develop self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Express themselves through visual, verbal and non-verbal forms of communication.
  • Explore ideas, feelings and experiences.
  • Work collaboratively and independently.
  • Make choices, solve problems and evaluate their work.

These experiences help children develop confidence in their abilities while encouraging creative thinking across all areas of learning.

Art and Design

Through Art and Design, children are encouraged to observe, explore and respond creatively to the world around them.

Pupils develop skills in:

  • Drawing, painting and printmaking.
  • Working with a variety of materials and media.
  • Designing and creating original artwork.
  • Exploring colour, texture, pattern and form.
  • Responding to the work of artists and designers.

Children are given opportunities to experiment, take creative risks and develop pride in their achievements while expressing their own unique ideas.

Drama

Drama provides children with opportunities to communicate, collaborate and develop confidence through imaginative play and performance.

Pupils learn to:

  • Explore characters and situations.
  • Express emotions and viewpoints.
  • Develop speaking and listening skills.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Build confidence in presenting ideas.

Drama helps children develop empathy, creativity and communication skills while making learning engaging and memorable.

Music

Music plays an important role in developing creativity, confidence and enjoyment.

Through singing, listening, performing and creating music, pupils have opportunities to:

  • Develop musical skills and understanding.
  • Explore rhythm, melody and sound.
  • Perform individually and as part of a group.
  • Respond to and appreciate different styles of music.
  • Express themselves through musical creativity.

Music encourages participation, teamwork and self-confidence while bringing enjoyment to children throughout their time at school.

Celebrating Creativity

The Arts are woven throughout school life at Richmount Primary School. Children are given opportunities to showcase their creativity through classroom activities, assemblies, performances, exhibitions and special events.
We believe that providing opportunities for children to perform, create and celebrate their achievements helps them grow in confidence and develop a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Creative learning often extends beyond the classroom through themed projects, performances, visiting workshops and enrichment activities.
These experiences help bring learning to life and allow children to connect their creativity with the wider world, developing an appreciation of different cultures, traditions and forms of artistic expression.

Working Together

Parents and families play an important role in encouraging creativity and self-expression. Whether through drawing, music, storytelling, performances or simply providing opportunities for creative play, these experiences help children develop confidence and enjoyment in the arts.
By working together within our nurturing school community, we can help every child develop the confidence, imagination and creativity to flourish both in school and beyond.
